3 Key Steps to Fostering Positive Mental Health Practices in the Workplace

  • 7 September, 2022

In the spirit of R U OK? Day falling on the 8th of this month, we thought we might share a few insights surrounding workplace practices that can help promote a positive environment for mental health at work. These key steps apply to both employers and employees and are relatively simple to implement through effective management and awareness channels.

What is mental health?

According to Beyond Blue, one of the most important distinctions to make when it comes to mental health is that the focus should be on wellness, rather than illness.

Beyond Blue goes on to share that the term ‘mental health’ is often used as a substitute for mental health conditions (anxiety, depressions and others), however, according to the World Health Organization, mental health is actually “a state of well-being in which every individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.”

You can see how important this is when it comes to fostering a positive workplace environment.

3 key tips for positive mental health in the workplace

  1. Encourage diversity and provide equal opportunity to all employees.
  2. Ensure the workplace is a safe environment to reduce stress and anxiety (remove physical dangers and address any concerns brought to HR in an efficient and effective manner).
  3. Encourage employees to speak openly about mental health and bring their concerns to the table, then provide support accordingly.

Though these might seem like in-depth processes, they are all absolutely manageable with a little effort and research. There are a range of different resources available to businesses to help encourage and implement great workplace mental health practices.

Check out the R U OK? Day website for more information and please strive to do your part to promote a mentally healthy workspace for all, whether you are an employer, employee or another party involved.

Stay safe, stay happy and stay well – don’t be afraid to say “R U OK?”
